History of the Jax Area Beaches

The beginning of the amusement park era in Jacksonville Beach dates back to 1905 with the opening of The Pavilion, which later expanded and became known as Little Coney Island. It quickly became a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike, offering various entertainment options such as a dance floor, swim room, bowling alley, and roller skate rinks. However, the wooden structure suffered from contracting and constant weathering, leading to its demolition in 1925. On the same year, the name Pablo Beach was changed to Jacksonville Beach. Another amusement park, the Ocean View Pavilion, was opened by W.H. Adams, Sr. in the same area, featuring a 93-feet high roller coaster. Unfortunately, due to the location’s vulnerability to weather damage, the larger coaster was eventually dismantled, leading to the park’s decline. A fire destroyed the Ocean View Pavilion in the early 1950s, leaving Adventure Landing as the only amusement park in the area. Pablo Beach made aviation history with Lt. Wm. DeVoe Coney’s transcontinental flight from San Diego, California, landing in Pablo Beach in 1921. Jacksonville Beach, along with other nearby communities, voted to retain their own municipal governments when Duval County consolidated with the City of Jacksonville in 1968. The Freebird Cafe, which later became Freebird Live, was a popular music venue run by Judy Van Zant and her daughter until its closure in 2016. The Jacksonville Beach Pier was destroyed by Hurricane Floyd in 1999 but was later rebuilt. However, Hurricane Matthew partially destroyed it in 2016, along with causing major flooding and a mandatory evacuation of the area.
